Labour

when I was pregnant I always heard how labour was terrible and the worst thing a women would ever go through. to me it wasn't a horrible experience or the worst thing to ever go through and my labour wasn't as scary and painful but this post is just going to give a few details about my labour and my birth experience!

To start from the very beginning I had a sweep when I was 39+6 so the day before my due date, this sweep was unsuccessful. I had another sweep when I was 40+3 which resulted in me loosing my bloody show that day and lost my plug the following day unfortunately it was still unsucceful in sending me into labour. it got to Monday the 20th august where I was 40+6 I had gone into hospital to talk through an induction and to have my third sweep. I was booked in to have an induction the following day so the 21st august at 10am.

so it was Tuesday the 21st august and I was going in for my induction but I woke up that day at 7am with tiny contractions about 10 minutes apart which meant the third and final sweep I was given the day before had already sent me into early labour. I got to the hospital at 10am where I was monitored for 2 hours where they confirmed I was having little contractions, it got to 12pm and they said it was still ok to go along with being induced as it would speed up my labour. I was induced with a pessary and my contractions got stronger more frequent and they were becoming very uncomfortable I was given paracetamol to help ease the pain but it didn't help. it then got to 4:30pm where my contractions were so strong the midwife examined me and said I was 4cm and ready to go over to the labour suite.

Once I was in the labour suite I was offered gas and air which helped massively it took away the pain almost completely it made me so calm and relaxed and able to start enjoying my labour. it got to about 6pm and the midwife examined me and told me my waters were bulging so they decided to break them for me which felt like a big relief! I continued to have contractions and they got to the point where it was impossible not to push, so they said if I needed to push to go for it!

Baby's heartbeat had remained stable throughout the whole labour and was a very happy baby until I was pushing his head out, it was becoming almost impossible to move him as he was so big and too big for the frame of my body. they eventually decided to cut me to help the baby come out and give him more room, this only helped a little bit but he was still not coming as quickly as they would like. it got to the point where I was using so much energy my body was shaking, they decided to take my gas and air away and said I wasn't allowed it so I could focus on my birth more so towards the end I was giving birth with no pain relief! his head was out but then his shoulders got stuck I had no energy and my baby's heart rate had dropped right down to 60/70bpm the midwives were worried and the emergency team were called and I had loads of people in the room with me this was all abit of a blur and the midwives said you just need to pull him out so I gave one last push and they pulled as hard as they could to pull him out and the next thing I remember he was on my chest!

I lost a lot of blood but not enough for it to be dangerous, as well as being cut I also tore in 2 different places and ended up being stitched for about 45 minutes! as traumatic as this sounds I can tell you now it wasn't that bad to me, people have experienced a lot worse but I must say we are lucky to have our little boy alive it was a close one!

It might not seem it but I enjoyed my labour and would do it all again tomorrow, labour was not painful to me it just felt like a lot of pressure and burning but it was bearable pain to me.

so finally on the 21st august at 21:03 Hudson Levi Jake Duffield was born weighing a massive 8lb11oz and to of done it all on gas and air is something I am very proud of! altogether from the very start my labour lasted 14 hours 3 minutes. we stayed in hospital overnight and were discharged the following afternoon!

thank you for reading my labour story!
